The Trout are still healthy!
Had a great evening fish. Jay, Fenwick and I went back to one of our favorite still water. We each got into a nice fish. We believe that Jason may have caught the UFO that Mark spotted last year! The water temperature and levels are looking good for the Brookies. It should be "on" for the next month or so. Jasons lunker was taken with a custom dryfly, I hear the price may have went up on this pattern after last evening! I checked the ph level for the first time and it was very low, around 4. Any lower then that and I don't think much lives....kinda scary!

The anniversary of Nathan's passing was the otherday and it reminded me of how lucky we are to be able to get together and go fishing. So take a few minute's of your day to remember what a great friend and person Nathan was and all the fun time's we all had together.

Fishing for Brown in the Valley
Mountain Maple - Perry Munro Guiding Service
I had the great pleasure of fishing with Perry Munro yesterday. I was fortunate enough to be able to tag along on a guided trip, for a out of town film executive. We had a great day on the water. Water levels were good but still a little cold for the trout. I did roll two and sting one early in our morning which were all great looking fish! (16+ inches). I look forward to heading back when water temperature are up a few degrees and hook into a few of these guys!
Let's just say the fishing in the area is TOO good to talk much more about..
Who is going to join me? Or should I start asking your wives.

Mr. Reid, I have found the answer!
During last weekends fishing excursion Mr. Smith and Mr. Reid delved into a heated discussion about a certain "fish bucket incident" that took place in 2002. It was a trying argument between both distinguished fishermen but only one would prevail.
Mr. Reid, with a help of a cranky Yankee I have found out what really happen that night. The answer is NO, you were not in attendance for the fish bucket incident you are just getting old and crazy. It happened the night after Nathan's funeral and NOT during the 2002 JBFC.
Since I have the support of 2 of the founding members and you have no pictures of the actual incident taking place, I'd say the argument is over.
I like Keith's Light beer and Amber Captain Morgan Rum, don't worry though, I'll share!
your truly,
Bucksaw Smitty
PS- If your wondering who is in the picture with me it's Max (left) and Jay (right).

April - Halifax - Insect/Emergence/Pattern
Here is what I was talking about having on hand in a quick reference laminated book. I took the information from the Tight Lines guide service out of Port Maitland. http://www.tightlines.ca/hatch.htm. He lists for Nova Scotia each month what hatch to expect, when it will happen during the day, and what fly to use. I have stepped it up one, just for you Marky, to help you fuckers catch some fish. I have pulled pictures of the insect and the fly to use off Google and put in one sweet but ugly package. This is only for April. I will hopefully follow with the rest of the months. If I don't, here is what you'll need.
Our Nova Scotia Chart below is based on these observations over the past number of years as they occur in South-Western Nova Scotia, where Tight Lines is located. The hatches are listed in order of appearance, so that the first fly listed is the first to appear as a hatch in the month(s) listed. The chart can be applied generally to the Province by knowing that Halifax will have the same hatches perhaps a week later, and Cape Breton a week after that. "Tight Lines"

Tight Lines Rec.
Your best shot at a Brown (and sea run Brown trout in early Spring - like April) is the Cornwallis if you are in the valley. The Cornwallis holds browns the entire length of the river, and the lower third has good runs of sea run trout. Flies (especially streamers early in the season). Hope that helps,Bill

St. Marys River NS - Water Levels
Barrie has sent me the address for the Real-Time Hyrdometric data for the St. Marys River near Stillwater. You can see where the water this past weekend was up almost 3 meters! This is a great site to check before we head down.

1st fish for Paul and I this year. 1/2 day Friday around zero and full day Sunday about plus three. Fishing wasn't bad. Pretty busy this year with this river being the only one with open water anywhere around here. Met Don Anderson and heard some stories. Learned a lot also. I landed a 19" brown on Friday right away (Jason's fish from last year tight to the bank and across the horse field up from the DU bridge) and nothing else for the rest of the day. I did have a 20+ brown take a run out from under a bank to my woolly bugger in 4" of water but it was all too fast and unreal for my early season hands to figure out. Sunday was a good day. I had a 20" in the morning and Paul had a 17". We left the traffic and walked on a frozen river up from HWY 781 to open water. Hit some pools and eventually the open river. It's spring fed so thaws at the top end and makes its way down. Really cold spring with lots of snow. We landed another 6 or so in the 12-15" range. I missed a lunker in the last pool. Had him, felt like a large log that moved ever so slightly, and missed him. Light hits both days.
