Photo Contest

I think it would be a cool idea to have a photo contest, after all the photo's have been collected maybe we'll post the top ten and vote on the best one.
Maybe the winner get's a free night stay next year on the trip or something along those line's.

Were Back!!

What a great trip, I'd like to thank everyone who helped organize the trip, especially Shawn and Phil for hooking us up with Chungo Outfitter's. I'd like to personally thank Sonia for the patch's and O'signs for the sticker's. I think everyone would agree that this year was the best JBFC so far and hopefully it get's better for year's to come. Please send all your photo's to me or Phil and feel free to post as many as you'd like on the site.

Shawn Breaking One Off

Last minute updates

First of all, nice fish!

Just a reminder regarding our Halifax to Calgary flight times:
DEPART Halifax at 8:05pm Wednesday FLIGHT #621
ARRIVE Calgary at 10:30pm Wednesday night.

We can discuss food in the comments section. We need enough for 4 nights at the cabin, 4 breakfasts, and 4 days on the water.

30 hours to go.

Hog Wild!

Holy shit boy's got in to some hog's last night. We only managed to land one of the big one's, but we hooked up with some 20'' + trout that had me screaming like a little girl. We fished a different part of the North Raven and the water condition's weren't much better than sunday, but we managed to find a slightly slower section of water that looked promising. With the may fly hatch in full swing it didn't take long to notice a few small { i mean small} boil's in the water and after some tricky casting and line mending i hooked this hog on a #14 olive dun. After this guy we notice one 6 feet down farther and shawn broke him off, a nice 20+ trout. And as Shawn predicted the trout moved 5-6 feet and started to feed again, luckly he came up stream to me and after missing him once i hooked him and he jumped out of the water a good foot and after a short fight he went to jump again and threw the hook. After that the hatch died off but we both managed to raise a couple of more BIG trout before it got dark. By far the most exciting fishing i've ever done, can't wait till you guy's come up and we can hit the Blackstone

Helicopter Update

Due to forest fire's in Fort Mac the helicopter won't be available, but after talking to the owner of the cabins we really don't need a helicopter to take us to the end of the Blakestone. He drew us a map of were to fish on and around the Blackstone including a few secret locations that ,

depending on how nice you are to me and Shawn we may tell you about. We had a long conversation with the owner and we are certain there is more than enough fishable water in and around the cabin's that we shouldn't have to go anywhere else to fish. The cabins are located in the middle of no where and it is a perfect location for the JBFC.

Atv's have been banned from this entire area so most of this water doesn't get fished very heavy anymore, and we will be the first to fish many of this pools this year and maybe the first to fish them in year's. This type of fishing will require alot of work but the reward's could be a 30'' inch trout at the end of your line!

Cresent Falls

One of the most beautiful spots i've been, Shawn's says it's loaded with cutts at the base of the falls. To bad it wasn't fishable, but we had to try!

fishing the falls

Blackstone River washed out and dirty

Alberta update

Sorry for the wait boy's, got in saturday around noon and headed back to Shawn's place and hung out with Liam.

Got up the next day and fished the fuck out of Alberta for 11 hours and got skunked. It poured down rain for 2 day's which made most rivers unfishable.

We did get some action on the North Raven in the morning. I missed 2 nice browns on a clouser minnow and Shawn missed 2 on a wollybugger.

More then back country bears.

Located on the North Saskatchewan River just south-west of the Bighorn Indian Reservation and built in 1972, the dam waters stretch 32 km back along the Saskatchewan River Valley with a width of more that 3 km. This is not a recreation lake as it is very turbulent and windy but offers a spectacular view of the Kiska Lookout Tower. This is also where the infamous Sasquatch was sited in 1973.

"The tallest sasquatch report would have to be the 15 foot tall creature reported by the 5 workmen at the Bighorn Dam site, in western Alberta, Canada near Nordegg. That was in 1969. Two of the men went up to the creature's location after it had moved off and the men who stayed below were amazed that their friends were less than half as tall as the creature was while it was in view. That's how they concluded that it was 15 feet tall. "

...and I thought it was just bears we had to worry about! Who brought the sasquatch spray?!

Jason heads for Alberta

Jason has been waiting for June 16th months, a few more hour due to a delayed flight shouldn't be too difficult, should it?

One down and 3 to go, Jason heads for Alberta today to do some pre-trip scouting with Shawn.

See you all in 4 days!

Nice work to who ever was able to delay Jasons flight!!!

GE Water just bought us a new 7.1 mega pixel digital camera with
video features, a water proof case, and 4 gb of memory for videos.
I will also have my mini DVD digital video recorder. GE just happened
to also buy an additional 6 hours of video for that camera. Remember,
if your dish washer or microwave breaks down, and it's a GE model,
we won't fix it because we're too busy taking care of our sales force.

I look forward to your visiting Alberta, can't wait to shake your hands,
and show you what a big fish looks like.......on the end of my line!

See you soon. We're ready, stocked up, good people attending, great
prizes, 4x4 vehicles, helicopter rides, multiple fish species, clear water,
guitars, singing, poker, farts, fish, and friends.

Recap.

Everyone should take the time to check out all the old posts. I just went through them all and had forgotten about a bunch! Worth a look.

A quick casting brush-up

I would recommend every one brush up on their double haul casting. False casting is not an option. Make that first cast count. See below for clarification:

NS Pre-Trip BBQ

The pre-trip BBQ will be now held on Thursday night 5:30pm at Phil's house. Steak, Beer with a healthy salad to keep us in tip top fishing shape. Any thing that should be brought up?

Question:

Does anyone have access to AA Batteries? Beg, borrow, or....
I need some for the camcorder mics I'm buying for the trip. Also GPS.

Can someone confirm the guitar situation. At least two worth playing please ! ha

Reading Material

Shawn, can you let Sean Morrison know the deal on the required reading material that traditionally is brought by the newest attendee. It can be from his own collection, or preferably some new stuff. Please make sure it is up to par unlike the stuff Mike brought that year.

10 day training camp

Mark, Jason and I are fishing daily for the next week to get us ready for JBFC. Today's camp brought us to Grand Lake and part of the canal for some small mouth and chain pickeral. It was a enough to loose count day. Mainly olive woolly buggers and clouser minnows for some stripers.

Welcome to Alberta!

Calgary 2 days ago. I think I see a fish breaking
just in front of tht van? Better bring your spey rod!

Westjet Carry-ons

Just called to check about what we can carry on. Hooks are not permitted and there is a restriction to 22.5 x 15 x 9 inches, 22lbs max for carry-on. I'm planning on packing my reels, 4 piece, my waders / boots, vest, and cameras to carry-on. I'm going to check my clothes, flies, rod case with 2 piece.

Water Levels

This site has all the water level info for where we are going. As of now, just look for the place with the most shitty weather and blown out rivers, that where we are heading!!

Things will drop, water temp will be up, fish will be on! It's all going to come together!

JUNE 6 NS Fish Report

Jason and I were tight for time but went to check out the last two still waters that run out of one of our favorite spots. Great looking still water, a few small water falls, still lots of hurricane damage. One little guys going after a dry fly. I missed him 3 times on a small blue dun. Switched it out to the "the one". Four casts, four fish. Gotta love that fly! Didn't have time to fish the whole still, will check it out later this week.
Mark came over and joined us in Jay's fly shed with some beer, talked trip, can't wait!

Get yor air sickness bag's ready!

Tell me that the sound at the begining of this doesn't get you going!!!
Well, happy 14 days folks!

Bull Trout Flies From Red Deer

"A Trip" the movie

Ok, now this may be a little far fetched but with a tiny bit of effort we can do this!

As you guys know I plan on doing a video of the trip. The more I think about this trip and the fact that ANYONE who enjoys fishing, or even just a good trip with good friends can only be jellous of what we have planned. More then just us would enjoy watching this trip unfold.

What I would like to do is video tape a few things that I can use to tie the trip together on film. I'd like to video tape eveyone sepetly and have them answer a few of then same question regarding the trip. How did the trip get started? What does this trip mean to you? What do your wives think?

Check out the trailer for the Fly Fishing Film Tour and you will know what i'm talking about. I think what we do every year is exciting enough to make a great short film for people to see.

THE RESPONSE

Hi Phil,
Sounds like a good project. How long will you be filming?
The requirements are pretty simple. The main requirement is that you
have copyright license for any music that you use to score your piece.
You can download the pdf versions of the Rules and Terms and Conditions
in the "Film Maker" tab on the web site. We will be updating the
website for the 2008 tour within the next month but it will pretty much
stay the same.
We must receive your entry before Nov 1st. All submissions will be
judged by a panel and the top 8 will be selected for the tour. Winners
will be announced the first week of January.
Your entry can be as long or as short as you want, but if it is over 15
min long we reserve the right to edit to make it fit in our time
schedule.
You will need to submit your film in both mini dv and dvd formats.
Hope that answers your questions. If you have any others feel free to
email me directly.
If you can forward me your mailing address I will put you in our film
maker database so you will be on our list for our film maker newsletter.
Good luck bro,
TR

Map Order

Just ordered these 2 maps from Map Town. Ends up
their in Calgary. I decided to have them laminated.
Roughly 26" x 35". Hopefully roll up nicely into my
fly rod tube. Can't wait to go exploring and bring bear
food. I mean Mark!

Flies For Bull Trout

We have all stock up by now on the flies we need for the Cutt's and Browns. It may be worth while grabbing a few big flies for the Bull trout. I'd hate to be the only one catching them. Here are a few that seem to be productive from some research:

Deceiver, Streaker:
Epoxy Head Deceiver, Blue & White: Cone head Rabbit Strip String Leech, Olive:
Epoxy Head Bait Fish, Gray Back Minnow: Cone head Rabbit Strip String Leech, White:
Bass Buggers:
Rabbit Strip Divers:

These are all big flies, number 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0 range. Having as many color options as possible is a plus. Bulls will often hit new colors over and over. The Bulls will be holding deep and in moving water, so mega weight heads will help them get down quick.

2 cents
