Hatcher back from Utah

Yo, I have been in Park City Utah working at the Sundance Film Festival. As always I brought my fly gear with me just in case I got the chance for some winter fishing. I was lucky enough to get out for two quick afternoon sessions. The fishing was tough with lots of snow on the ground and the locals saying things are slow and fish are sluggish. Only one fish was hooked and given a 6" from my hand release, the brown trout that time of year look awesome.

JBFC member photo in "The Canadian Fly Fisher" magazine

"Getting ready to chase monster bulls on the

Blackstone River in Alberta, Jay and the boys

put in some time behind the bench.

There's nothing better than an early morning

tying session before a day's worth of fishing!"

We made it in again! A picture of Jay tying up a "Zibber Bogger" @ Chungo Creek Outfitters camp in Nordegg AB. made it in the Feb/April 2009 edition of The Canadian Fly Fisher magazine. To check it out go to http://www.canflyfish.com/ or by buying a copy at a vendor.

Looking good Jay!

"TARACAROL" gets noticed! (Agian)

Hey boys! I sent an e-mail to a few Atlantic salmon organizations and magazines to see if they would be interested in doing an article on the "TARACAROL".

I actually got a reply from Joanne Mailman of the St. Mary's River Association and she requested a picture of it and said the following;

"Hey Mark: I'd love to have a picture for our spring newsletter. I am in the process of doing it now. I'll put your write up in it as well. Sounds like it was a fun project. "

Joanne

JBFC 2009 Pokemouche River N.B.

We're back from the camp and we had a great weekend. Got alot of wood split, new heater in the living room, and a new chandler in the kitchen.

We also talked about the trip, here's the results:

-dates: June 26th-July 3rd, plan on heading up thurs. evening June 25th.

-@ Joe's dads camp right on the river, camp sleeps 5 + a few on the floor, bring mattresses. The rest will sleep in tents or possibly a tent trailer if Joe's uncle still has it then.

- the camp runs off of a genny for lighting and propane for cooking. Not sure yet if the camp has an oven. Joe will let us know in comments.

-sounds like we could have up to 10 guys for sure (Mark, Phil, Jay, Joe, Barrie, Mike, Ryan, Shawn, Matt J., and Jeff King.) 11 if we can get Max up. So any ideas on sleeping arrangements for say 5 guys would be great.

-need to figure out who is going for sure so we can plan JBFC trip packs(shirts, hats, etc.), food amounts.
-better pic of Joe's camp above

and ?'s ask in comments and we'll try to get them answered.

see ya'll in June!

Date for the 2009 JBFC

Some of the guys are heading to the camp this weekend to discuss the date for JBFC09. I`d like to throw out the idea of June 26th to July 1st. So far the buzz is a good ol`trip .... and a party like it`s 1999!

Hatcher back from Costa Rica

Lise and I spent the holidays in Costa Rica this year. It was quite the spot, very green and lush, with lots of wildlife. Five foot iguanas, howler and capachan monkeys, sloths, toucans, caymans, and soaring pelicans were common sights. Most of our time was spent on the Pacific coast in the small surf town of Malpais. I was able to try my hand at surfing while there, had a blast. (note to self .... time to build some upper body strength!!!) Most days the temperature was 30'+, beer was cheaper then water and the surfer girls were HOT! (yes Lise, that includes you)

It was a quick trip but did bring my rod with me just in case. After asking a few locals where I could do some river fishing, and a lot of "no place to go around here" responses my new friend Al drew me a mud map to get me to the Rio Bongo. Next day I rented a 500 Grizzly Quad and started off on the 20km run to get there. It was a nice ride, half on the back "roads" and half on the beach. Once at the Rio (That`s spanish for river Ryan) I realized I was a bit ill prepared, it was a beautiful spot but not for the 6wt rod a had and not to be fishing from shore I spent some time playing in the shallows and had 3 or 4 fish follow a few flys in but no takers. Costa Rica is a different place. You cant just venture off and explore as we do here. I would have loved to work my way up the river to where I felt the fish were but the 8 foot crocodile and the 130 snake species I learned about a few days before seemed to change my mind.

I had hoped to get to Lake Arenal for peacock bass on this trip but plans changed, next time!

I'm in......I'm f#$king in!

Boys,

Count me in at the JBFC 2009. Talked it over with the boss and laid down the law. Yeah right! I will fly into Fredericton to meet my new nephew, rent a car (or maybe invite Matt to come along and he can drive). Stay for 5 nights or so, and head home. Can't wait. Cabin looks great and fishing sounds fantastic. We need more updates Joe. Size of the main river, depth, trout size, species, distance from Fredericton, boats?, other rivers around, their sizes, best time of year, what your uncles use for flies that time of year, any dirty french strippers, etc.

Anyone have a problem if I invite Matt Jenkinson? Enough room?

Another diddy by The Mannette Trio!

Another fine tune performed by fellow fly fishers "The Mannette Trio" with special guests Donald and Shirley Bellefontaine.
