Reminiscing

I spent a half hour late tonight hitting the "older posts"
button on the blog and went back looking at all posts since
December 2009. Thanks to all of you for keeping our
friendships in line, to the new-comers, and for all who get
involved in this group in the future. It has been a blast
for me and something I hope to share with my 3 boys some day.
Merry Christmas to you and your families. See you when I see you!

Calgary Bob Cats

This is insane. Two bobcats playing games on
Riaan's home made ice hockey rink in the middle
of Calgary. Wish I was there! No Paul.....you are

Rum Samplers Weekend @ the Camp!

It is once again time to sample some fine rums from around the world @ tha camp. How does Jan 8th-9th work for everyone? Maybe we can have alittle buggy run and bunny hunt too. Also we need to decide what we are doing for the 2011 JBFC, many issues to discuss while indulging some fine pours. Ryan "get your ass down this time"!

Hope to see all in Jan at the camp, and Barrie let me know if the camp is open for this weekend.

R.I.P. Ryan Horning

The spirit of Mr. Ryan Horning will be remembered always by his peers as a fun loving, sock wiping, deer hunting, wine hugging, catching "NO" salmon guy that enjoyed the great outdoors and life it's self.

We will miss you Ryan.
(Now screw off and get down to the camp with us and stop crying about the drive!)

Bad News.......Summer Is Over

Thanks for entertaining me while I was home for
a short visit. I had a great time. Thanks to Phil for
being my chauffeur. I will return the favour in Alberta
to any of you that make it out next year. It was a
fun few days that I really needed. I'm back now to
three sick kids and work. Barry, your camp is a
life savor. Thanks again for having me up.

Day one of the Fall Trip

Late season trip for fall trout and salmon.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

Last days of fall ... last chance!

Spawning Fever: Autumn is the Time for Egg Patterns, Streamers and Big Trout

To everything, there is a season. Fall is the season for striking scenery, cool, comfortable weather and, best of all, big trout. October is a terrific month on most trout streams, and if you happen to live near a stream that gets a spawning run, October may be your favorite month of the year.

Dry-fly fishing can be hit-or-miss in the fall. When there are flies on the water, trout may very well rise and provide you with some memorable late-season action. Nymphing works as well in the fall as it does the rest of the year. But two categories of flies are at their best after Labor Day: streamers and egg patterns.

The reason, of course, is that fall is when most species of trout and salmon spawn. Brown trout, brook trout and Atlantic and Pacific salmon all ascend rivers to create the next generation of fish. For the Pacific species, such as Chinook and coho salmon, it will be their final act; these species die after spawning. The Atlantics and the trout will live to (hopefully) spawn again next year.

Near The Fly Shack headquarters in upstate New York, great fishing can be had on a variety of waters for a variety of fish at this time of year. Landlocked salmon make their annual migration to the shallow shorelines of Lake George. Chinook and coho salmon, along with really large brown trout, run up the Lake Ontario and Lake Erie tributaries in spectacular, eagerly anticipated runs. Steelhead rainbows won't spawn until next spring, but they start running the rivers in the fall too. And our local trout rivers will find fish feeling frisky and hungry as the days get short and the leaves start to fall.

The spawning act is fairly simple. The female digs a small nest, or "redd," in fine gravel on the streambed. Her mate sidles up next to her, and as she deposits her eggs, the male extrudes the milt which will fertilize them. Exactly when this happens varies from river to river and species to species. But even if the pregnant hens aren't doing the wild thing yet, the other trout in the stream seem to know by instinct that tasty, nutritious eggs are likely to spill from nests and drift downstream. That's why flies like Glo-Bugs, Sucker Spawn, Estaz eggs and Egg-Sucking Leeches are so effective this time of year. Fish them on a natural, dead drift through any spot that looks like it might hold a trout. Deeper is better, and since egg patterns usually aren't weighted, you may need to add some split shot to pull your egg to the bottom.

Of course, the eggs won't hatch until spring, so the streamers that work so well in October aren't meant to suggest the offspring of the spawning fish. But the streams are full of minnows and young-of-the-year trout that love to raid spawning trout's nests, and grown-up trout in spawning mode will attack them with extreme prejudice. And even in streams where no spawning happens to be occurring, trout love streamers in the fall -- in all likelihood because they can sense that the long, lean winter is only weeks away and they'll need to fatten up to survive.

Salmon and steelhead anglers tend to have favorite patterns for fall streamer fishing, but a wide range of patterns and colors will work well - everything from black Woolly Buggers to red and yellow Mickey Finn bucktails. Unlike the dead drift you're after with Glo-Bugs, your streamers need to swim. You can try and impart the curious, hungry movements of minnows foraging for roe, or you can make your streamers dart through the water as though they're terrified by their vulnerability. You should do both (unless one retrieve is working so well you have no reason to try anything else.) Again, deeper is better. Try a sinking line or detachable sinking tip with a very short leader - two or three feet of sturdy fluorocarbon is not too short - and work your streamer through every likely lie. Bunny Leeches, Muddlers, Zonkers, Deceivers and Clousers will all take fish this time of year, and have the potential to take big ones.

If you can, try to avoid wading through spots where the streambed is mainly gravel. Remember, if all goes well, those eggs will be nice trout in two seasons. Try to resist the temptation to catch trout that are actively engaged in the spawning process, but if it can't be helped, try to land them quickly and release them with as little fuss as possible. There are few things in the world as precious as wild trout, and this is where they come from.

Big Ones Play Here.......

This is where the big fish start. Just as you pass the horse field upstream of the DU bridge and take the sharp left. Beautiful water. 2-3 feet with lots of under cut banks. Got 2 of my 3 in this section. Missed a few here also. Jason, this is the section you enjoy fishing and did well in.

Stauffer - September 14, 2010

Stopped by Stauffer after leaving the Strachan Gas Plant. Afternoon fish, cloudy with sunny patches, and no one around. Perfect. Browns are changing colours this time of year and building their hook jaws. I caught all males. Landed three from 18-21" and had a monster follow my fly in 2" of water downstream as it drifted for at least 10 feet, last second he went for it and missed. Would have been an awesome video. Good hatch of small black flies keeping the all fish busy on the surface. I went with a big black (colour to match the small flies in the hatch) and orange bellied grass hopper. All yarn and no foam. It kept the small fish away and enticed the big ones. Wish one of you was there to enjoy in the fun. Two hour fish and one of the best this year.

OK! Time to put my foot down, October 2&3 weekend. Who can make it down to River Oaks for a little camp work and maybe a buggy run to let Barrie try out his new Honda?

Monday, August 23, 2010

HOLY SHIT! We need a trip to the camp!

When can anybody make it down to the camp for a weekend, it's been too long? We can do some relaxing, buggy running, or rum drinking; I don't care we just need a trip down.

Blackstone River August 2nd and 3rd

Untrained. Day 1.

Trained! Day 2.

Nice trout as the water begins to clear up from heavy rain upstream. Day one.

Bruce Bowen (from Michigan) and I headed into the Blackstone Monday morning. The Blackstone was blown out. We couldn't get upstream due to the 2" of mud that formed on the Chungo Creek bypass back to the river. For those of you who spent 3 hours climbing the Chungo Creek road at 1 km/hour in Ford Escapes with stock tires to meet a grizzly and her cub should remember the kind of mud I'm talking about! Bruce and I tried for some bulls instead in Brown Creek which was low of water and crystal clear. I changed the name to Clearlow Creek. What a fucked up day! No bullies but some practise for Bruce. He said he hadn't fly fished in 15 years. I suspect he never did......a

We hit the cabin and unloaded by 4 pm, had a steak dinner, drank 2 bottles of fine red wine, and dropped over the bank to fish the river that by then was getting fairly clear (as can be seen in my picture above). We walked upstream 2 clicks and back out on a quad path to the cabin. Fish were caught. Bruce got his first ever cutty. I could barely see it! Beer, poker, and bed.

Next day was sunny. The road dried up. We worked our way back to the meadow section in another 1/4 tonne Ford (I need to get a real truck one day) and headed down stream. Fuck that's a 2 km walk to the first pool. On the way back we found a quad trail that follows this 2 km section above the river to the meadow section. High recommended! Clouds covered the sun, temperature dropped, so we went to hopper dropper. Hit some fish on the way down (a few big ones). The way back was awesome. Temperature raised 5 degrees (around 2 pm) and we went foam hoppers (yes hoppers as in 2 each) and started smacking fish on the surface. Bruce finally smoked his first real fish between 18-20" by 3 pm. The sun eventually popped back into play, we had a small hatch of blue may flies, and smoked off 10-15 trout in one pool feeding along the back. All 18" plus!

It was a great couple of days.

JBFC 2010 Goes Bigtime!

This years trip was a great time. Lots of fishing, food, drinks and laughs. A big thanks goes out to Cal for bringing the lobsters and a big thanks to Barrie for the use of the camp once again. Congrats to Jay for landing one of the biggest brookies I've ever seen come out of Nova Scotia, he won the biggest fish trophy with a 18 1/2" trout. She was "chunky".

Hope to see ya'll at next years JBFC, location to be announced soon.

I hope the real JBFC was a hit and that everyone had fun, satyed safe, and caugth a few fish.

Mayfly hatch in the snow

Me and Mark had one of those day's where everything was perfect for trout fishing. Small mayfly hatch, warm water temperature, lots of fat trout including a hog that didn't want it's picture taken. Catching them on a variety of flies and techniques with a few dry fly battles in some tight cover. First time I have seen a Mayfly hatch while it was snowing.

We made it in CFF mag once again!

We made it in the Readers Show Case section of the Canadian Fly Fisher again. Another fine pic Mr. Hatcher took while him and I fished East River Pictou a few years ago. Top righthand side is the pic.
