Fly Question

Since salmon are in the rivers to spawn, and not to eat, we want to take advantage of their aggressiveness? I assume brown trout run the rivers with the salmon to eat the eggs. Maybe spawning as well, but I from what I can tell, they spawn from October to mid December. So, brown trout make salmon mad. So would rainbow trout.
I think large streamers tied in bright colours to represent either brown trout or rainbow trout would cause strikes at the fly based on the aggression towards the egg eaters.
Jason. Are flies that that hard to tie?
Do brook trout feed on salmon eggs? Do sea runs feed while spawning and do they eat salmon eggs?

Single digit countdown is here!

Boys she won't be long now. We're down to the final few days before the 10th Annual Jim Beam Fishing Classic gets under way. I have a few ?'s / requests;

1. Jason, don't forget the trophy. I know your getting use to having it at your place but a new era is about to begin.

2. We should get a meal list on the go soon to make it easier for the chefs

3. Are we gonna do the JBFC old school for one night? I heard someone will be bringing a bottle of poison on the trip. "NO FISH BUCKETS ALOUD"

I'm scared...........................................

Ducks Unlimited

I recently bought a Ducks Unlimited print called "Buds" in a silent auction here in Red Deer. When working out the payment details with DU in Manitoba, I told them about the rock I found on the Blackstone River that looks like a ducks head. The rock is one solid piece, shaped like a ducks head, with an orange beak. I thought the people out there who get off on ducks, and there are lots of them (Jason) might like to see the rock. Maybe they'll think about it when they're by themselves in the dark (Jason)?

Actually, they want to put it in their fun section on line and in their Conservator magazine. Pretty cool.

Alberta Prizes On Route

Boys. I'm excited about the prizes I was able to store away this year for the trip. I'm really excited about the JBFC 2008 and really need it. I look forward to hanging out with you guys and even better, where I grew up. I'm getting old and missing it. You never know, with three BOYS under 2.5 years, I could be home sooner than expected.
I have two great prizes and a few little cool prizes this year. I look forward to hats and T-Shirts and hope some of you are making them up. Its become a tradition and something I hope to get.
Larget fish prize for the 2008 JBFC is a neat little pack that I think fits the bill for a day pack. One or two species fish, everything is accessible, and in front of you. Hope who ever wins it, enjoys it.

First salmon (once we are all present) prize is also awesome. Fell in love with it when I saw it and had to get it for a prize. I think you'll agree it would be great to have.

I'm sending a box home before I leave and the prizes will be included. See you fuckers on the water!

JBFC Trip Accommodations for 2008

This years trip will be hosted by the River Oaks Camp. Great accommodations and right on the St. Mary's River. Salmon are being caught not far from the front door!

2007 JBFC Title Fight

21.5" straight

Still 21.5" unless you can prove otherwise?

Wet net in sink measuring 10 + 10 = 20"

Dry net with 21.5" tubing in it measuring 10 + 10 = 20"

OK. I finally had time today to get the evidence required to determine if Phil's fish caught in Alberta in 2007 was larger than the fish Jason caught. Phil's was caught first in the Chungo River and was 21" in length. Jason's fish was caught on the final day, 20 feet from camp, in a large pool on the Blackstone River where the Wapiapi River dumps into it. Both fish were beautiful.

My net was used to measure Phil's fish and Jason's fish was measured against his rod. Mark Smith was present during both catches and measurements. Mainly because he is always available to measure and land the fish.....not having a fish of his own. Jason's fish measured in at 21.5" using a measuring tape at a later date against the rod. We have all acknowledged this form of measurement as OK for the JBFC and even better with someone there to witness it.

Below are pictures of my net. I cut a piece of plumbers tubing to 21.5" when straight. I bent the tube into the shape of the net when sitting with no weight or stress in the net. As not to stretch or scue the measurement. As you can see, both wet and dry, the net measures the 21.5" length as 20" on the nose.

So, my net is inaccurate. I assume due to the large and thick lines used to mark each inch. Or because the manufacturer is an idiot.

This leaves us to the conclusion that one can add 1.5" to any measured fish from my next. Making Phil's bull trout from the Chungo a wapping 22.5'' and Jason's 21.5". Just for the record, it makes my bull trout, caught in the top pool on the Blackstone River in the gap section also 21.5" as it measured out at 20" on my net.

Now, the talk of adding weight in the net to reproduce the feel of the fish. Let's say I filled the plumbers tube, measuring straight at 21.5", with sand to 3 lbs to feel like the bull trout. It would simply pull the 21.5" tube further down into the net. Thus resulting in a smaller measurement at for example 10 + 9 inches or 19". Then the inaccuracy of the net would increase to 21.5" - 19" which is 2.5".

So, adding weight is worse. Plain and simple, the net is out 1.5".

I hear this will be decided the old school way. 3 pm sharp behind the school. Or, you each plead your case at the camp over beers.

I'm not sure what I think. For sure, we need more rules around measuring fish for the JBFC 2008.

Alberta Salmon

Not sure how you boys did this weekend on the St Mary's but it pissed me off enough that I wasn't able to join you that I had to hit the really high and dirty banks of the Red Deer River with Morrison for a few Alberta salmon. It took a while to figure out but in the end the little goofs wanted purple wooly buggers, on the bottom, and barely moving. I landed four browns over 20" and Morrison hooked into a pike. Good fun in the rain and wind. Just took the one photo with my phone.
